Chico Hamilton • The Further Adventures Of El Chico

Legendary jazz drummer and bandleader Foreststorn ‘Chico’ Hamilton, born September 21st, 1921 in Los Angeles, had a fast track musical education in a band with his schoolmates Charles Mingus, Illinois Jacquet, Ernie Royal, Dexter Gordon, Buddy Collette and Jack Kelso. Engagements with Lionel Hampton, Slim & Slam, T-Bone Walker, Lester Young, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Barnett, Billy Eckstine, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Billie Holiday, Gerry Mulligan and six years with Lena Horne established this young West Coast prodigy as a jazz drummer on the rise, before striking out on his own as a bandleader in 1955.

Chico appears in the March Milastaire number in the film “You'll Never Get Rich” (1941) as part of the backing group supporting Fred Astaire, and performed on the soundtrack of the Bing Crosby/Bob Hope film “Road to Bali”.

Chico’s impact upon jazz includes the introduction of two unique and distinct sounds: first in 1955 with his Original Quintet which combined the sounds of his drums, the bass of Carson Smith, the guitar of Jim Hall, the cello of Fred Katz, and the flute of Buddy Collette; and the second in 1962 with his own drums, the bass of Albert Stinson, the guitar of Gabor Szabo, the tenor sax of Charles Lloyd, and the trombone of George Bohanon.

In December 2006, Congress confirmed the President’s nomination of Chico to the Presidents Council on the Arts. And in 2007, Chico received a Living Legacy Jazz Award as part of The Kennedy Center Jazz in Our Time Festival, as well as receiving a Doctor of Fine Arts from The New School.

Dynamic as ever at the age of 86, Chico Hamilton has a resume that includes scores for film, original compositions, commercial jingles, 50 + albums as a leader, and countless international tours. In 2006, Chico released four CD’s on Joyous Shout! in celebration of his 85th birthday: “Juniflip” featuring guest appearances from- legendary Love front- man Arthur Lee, criminally under-rated vocalist (and successful actor) Bill Henderson, and former Hamilton band members trombonist George Bohanon and bass trombonist Jimmy Cheatham; “Believe” with Special Guest appearances from vocalist and R & B Diva Fontella Bass and trombonist George Bohanon; “6th Avenue Romp” featuring Special Guest appearances from guitarist Shuggie Otis, trumpeter Jon Faddis, trombonist George Bohanon, vocalist Brenna Bavis and percussionist Jaimoe of the Allman Brothers Band; and “Heritage” with Special Guest appearances from vocalist Marya Lawrence and tromboist George Bohanon. September 2007, Chico released “Hamiltonia” sampling his original compositions from the four albums released in 2006. “Hamiltonia” is an impassioned statement of purpose- an emphatic endorsement of writing and performing THIS music in the NOW, the way the GREATS did in their time, and confirms Hamilton's status as one of the most important living jazz artists and composers.

Over the years, Chico has had a series of dance floor successes, including his signature song “Conquistadors from his 60's Impulse album “El Chico”, and the Brazilian influenced song “Strut” from Chico's 1979 outing on Elektra “Nomad”, which became so successful on the Northern Soul Scene in the U.K. that it had its own dance!! “Conquistadors” also was the signature track for E-man when he rocked the dance floor at Frank's Cocktail Lounge in Brooklyn. In 2002 a track titled “For Mods Only” from Chico's 1968 Impulse album “The Dealer”, was included on the [Thievery Corporations “Sounds from the Verve Hi-Fi”. Fall 2006, Rong Music released the 12” vinyl “Kerry's Caravan” from Mudd & Chico Hamilton, a moody yet stunning slice of modern music and a molten melting pot ready made for filling the dance floor with remixes from long-term Idjut Boys collaborator and Fiasco imprint boss Ray Mang!! And the recent Impulsive! Remix Project features Mark De Clive Lowe’s take on Chico’s classic 60s track “El Toro”. Released December of 2007 from SoulFeast (Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell & Brian Michel Bacchus) on 12” Limited Edition Vinyl is their recasting of Chico's classic track “Mysterious Maiden”, and coming Spring 2008 from SoulFeast is a CD & double vinyl 12” EP “Chico Hamilton Presents: Alternative Dimensions of El-Chico”.

Red Norvo • Just A Mood

Vibraphonist Red Norvo was among the most flexible of improvisers from his generation. On this Bluebird CD, Norvo is heard with three very different groups. He interacts with trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, tenor saxophonist Ben Webster and pianist Jimmy Rowles in a swing-oriented sextet; their performances are highlighted by the memorable "Just a Mood." In addition, Norvo plays four songs that have the word "Blue" in their titles with a quintet that is an outgrowth of his trio of a few years earlier (this group consists of flutist Buddy Collette, guitarist Tal Farlow, Monty Budwig or Red Callender on bass and drummer Chico Hamilton) and four "Rose" songs with the who's who of West Coast Jazz: trumpeter Shorty Rogers, clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre, pianist Pete Jolly, Farlow, Callender and drummer Larry Bunker. No matter what the setting, Norvo fits in quite comfortably and the consistent high-quality of the formerly rare music makes this a highly recommended set to bop collectors.

Chico Hamilton • Complete Studio Sessions [1956-1957]

Review by Michael G. Nastos
This is the fourth Fresh Sound CD reissuing drummer Chico Hamilton's early ensembles to come out, and it is perhaps his most important grouping. The quintet played originals and standard covers that combined elements of Eastern and Western strains of mainstream and chamber jazz with instruments like flute, cello, and guitar. Hamilton created new music that some scratched their heads at, but most understood and enjoyed its softer tones and rounded edges. These studio works from four Los Angeles based sessions released on the Pacific Jazz, World Pacific, and Decca labels stem from the second version of Hamilton's quintet, which originally included Jim Hall and Buddy Collette. When Hall joined the Jimmy Giuffre trio, the tasteful guitarist John Pisano was recruited, then original woodwind player Buddy Collette left for greener pastures, and multi-instrumentalist Paul Horn was asked to join. Cellist Fred Katz and bassist Carson Smith remained, retaining the classical spirit of the group, but the addition of Pisano and Horn did nothing to diminish what the ensemble sound had attained, and would embellish. And it is their compositions that distinguish this music from any other group of the era, save that of Dave Brubeck. Smith's "Chanel #5" is a fluid, sprightly flute/cello waltz with Horn's Paul Desmond style alto sax added on. "Beanstalk" is an easy swinger merging melodies of "Love Me or Leave Me" and "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," while "Mr. Smith Goes to Town" takes off with Smith's witty bass leading the charge. Of the classically oriented compositions of Katz, the beautiful ballad "Lillian" is as romantic as can be with Horn's alto singing his heart out, while "Reflections" has Horn's evocative and pristine flute countering a pristine cello from the author. Hall's tunes remained in the repertoire, especially the extraordinary "Siete-Cuatro" in 7/8 with ostinato bass, Horn's wonderful textures on alto, repeat guitar lines, legato cello, and tambourine accents. There are three abbreviated versions of Hall's band theme "I Know," a classic read of "Satin Doll," an intriguing calypso infused "Soft Winds," an outstanding take of "September Song" where Horn's clarinet and the cello of Katz weep mournfully about the change of season and lost love, and a fine flute front loaded Latin snake charmer style identifying the classic "Caravan." Collette also left behind "Blue Sands" and "The Ghost," performed on the Stars of Jazz ABC television program on Christmas Eve of 1956. The former is an exotic discourse in mysterious notions, the latter using very clever interplay between the five instrumentalists. Hamilton plays brushes and little instruments for the most part, composed two tracks where he is the featured soloist, and co-composed another four with Katz that appeared in the film of Sweet Smell of Success. There is a full CD of that movie soundtrack available on a separate CD that is the fifth reissued Fresh Sound CD featuring this ensemble. While this is not absolutely the complete studio recordings of this legendary ensemble, it is ultimately substantive, representing a marvelous sound that is as appealing as any in the modern post-bop idiom, and ranks favorably with any chamber jazz attempts of any era.

The Chico Hamilton Quintet • Transfusion

Review by Scott Yanow
The first four CDs released by Studio West, a subsidiary of V.S.O.P., are all taken from concise (around three minutes apiece) performances that were made to be used as part of the radio show "The Navy Swings." This particular release features performances by one of drummer Chico Hamilton's most stimulating groups, a quintet comprised of Charles Lloyd (on tenor, flute and alto), guitarist Gabor Szabo, trombonist George Bohanon, bassist Albert Stinson and the drummer/leader. Because the individual selections are briefer than usual, in many cases only one soloist is featured on each cut. But overall, there is plenty of solo space for Lloyd (very much playing in a Coltrane vein), Bohanon and Szabo. The mixture of seven standards with nine Lloyd originals works quite well with plenty of variety in moods and tempoes. An excellent all-around showcase for this much underrated but very timeless unit.

Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker • Where It Starts It Ends

Gerry Mulligan, who was primarily known as a saxophonist, but was an expert exponent of clarinet and piano as well as being a highly-respected arranger, was one of the giants of post-war modern jazz and was one of the leading lights in the cool jazz movement focused on the West Coast.

In 1952 he began a legendary collaboration with the young lyrical trumpeter Chet Baker, newly-arrived on the jazz scene after an Army career, with the primary era of their professional relationship ending in 1953 when Mulligan was jailed on narcotics charges.

Baker's melodic style fit well with Mulligan's, leading them to create improvised contrapuntal textures free from the rigid confines of a piano-enforced chordal structure. This great set comprises some of the best recordings they made together during this time as part of Gerry Mulligans quartet.

After the first sessions, which involved pianist Jimmy Rowles, Mulligan developed an innovative piano-less line-up, using bass and drums to make up the quartets, with the pairings being Bobby Whitlock (bass) and and Chico Hamilton (drums), and Carson Smith (bass) and Larry Bunker (drums).

It offers fascinating insights into the the way Mulligan and Baker developed an intuitive rapport, and an absorbing collection of landmark modern jazz performances.

Chico Hamilton • Chico Hamilton With Paul Horn

Review by Scott Yanow
This album draws its material from three separate sessions led by drummer Chico Hamilton. Hamilton teams up with guitarist Howard Roberts and bassist George Duvivier for two songs, has two others in a trio with guitarist Jim Hall and bassist George Duvivier, and for the final four numbers is heard in the second version of his famous Quintet (the only selections that actually include Paul Horn). The latter selections feature Horn on various reeds (flute, clarinet, tenor, alto and piccolo), cellist Fred Katz (who wrote the four songs), guitarist John Pisano, bassist Carson Smith, and Hamilton.

VA • The Cool Scene - Twelve New Ways To Fly

Review
by Thom Jurek
Despite its title, The Cool Scene at Cafe Bizarre: Twelve New Ways to Fly is one of the more unusual retrospective compilations to be issued in the 21st century. The Cafe Bizarre may have become truly infamous in the late 1960s as an East Village haven for radicals and psychedelic experimenting philosophers. That said, in the later '50s and early '60s it was also a cathedral for the Beat writers and various elements of the jazz scene. This collection features poets reading their works as well musical selections by the Cafe's more famous patrons from the jazz world: Charlie Parker, Lennie Tristano, Roy Eldridge, Gerry Mulligan, Chico Hamilton, and even George Shearing. Most of the poetry on this set is by long-faded personas we never knew, and sounds like it: nostalgic yet reverent and intense imitations of works by their more well-known forebears. In other words, the works of the Mad Monk, Ellie Girl with Seven Beat Sulks, Ringo Angel (who sounds like a professor and might have even become one), Felix Lupus, Stevenson Phillips, and Jamaica Johnny Cayonne are here for either nostalgia or ridicule, but they contain a certain innocence that long ago died in America. There are other musical selections as well, and all of it adds up to a curiosity piece for those obsessed with history or the dregs of Beat-era poetry.

Chico Hamilton • A Different Journey

Review by Scott Yanow
Drummer Chico Hamilton considered this quintet (which also included Charles Lloyd on tenor and flute, trombonist George Bohanon, guitarist Gabor Szabo and bassist Albert Stinson) to be his finest band. This superb LP of material not yet reissued on CD has several memorable melodies (including the closing "Island Blues"), lots of advanced yet logical improvising, and more than its share of variety. The group had its own sound and was quite underrated during its relatively short life. A gem.

Chico Hamilton • Live At The Strollers

These 1955 performances by the original Chico Hamilton Quintet were recorded live during their first and successful engagement at Harry Rubin’s Strollers, a nightclub in Long Beach, California. Listening to them, we can appreciate the high spirit of the group in its formative period, exploring and developing new sounds through the free interplay of its five talented members. The quintet soon acquired a local following, which grew rapidly when radio station KFOX- through Sleepy Stein’s popular jazz program-began a series of live broadcasts from the club. The gig at The Strollers was due to last for two weeks, but stretched into eight months, giving the Quintet a residency which allowed them to settle in and grow.

Chico Hamilton • The Dealer

Review by Scott Yanow
Drummer Chico Hamilton introduced many top young players during his years as a bandleader, but few probably realize that Larry Coryell made his recording debut with Chico a year before joining Gary Burton's quartet. The Dealer marks Coryell's initial appearance on record, and at times he sounded oddly like Chuck Berry (especially on "The Dealer"). Also heard on this set are altoist Arnie Lawrence, bassist Richard Davis, organist Ernie Hayes (on two numbers), and, on his spirited boogaloo "For Mods Only," Archie Shepp making a rare appearance on piano. Most of the performances still sound surprisingly fresh, especially the explorative "A Trip," making this an underrated but worthy release.

Chico Hamilton • El Chico

Review by Scott Yanow
In 1965, Japanese altoist Sadao Watanabe was Chico Hamilton's regular reed player, and it is for his playing (fairly early in his career) that this LP is most notable. Also heard from is guitarist Gabor Szabo (winding up a long period with Hamilton), bassist Al Stinson, guest trombonist Jimmy Cheatham (on three of the eight songs), and the Latin percussion of Willie Bobo and Victor Pantoja. The band plays a couple of movie themes (including "People"), three Hamilton originals, a group improvisation, and two obscurities. The influences of Latin jazz, bossa nova, and the avant-garde are mixed into the unusual musical blend.
